Statement Calling for Unity from Chair Becky Laughner and the VDC:

Words can be hard to find in grief, but we again echo the sentiments of our Congressman, Frank Mrvan, who said it best... ‘Political violence has absolutely no place in our discourse. Let us go forward with peace as a nation. My thoughts and prayers are with Charlie Kirk and his family.’

In the days that have followed Charlie Kirk's murder, we have seen a barrage of hatred, calls for civil war, racial slurs, and threats.

We understand that everyone processes grief differently. We condemn ALL calls for violence.

As the Chair of the VDC, I am focused on solutions and working together. I am committed to spreading truth, working together, and uniting a city that has much more in common than it may seem.

I have invited the Chair of the Republican Party to meet to provide answers to any questions, concerns, and most importantly, a path forward. I am confident they will accept this invitation. Our politics may differ, but our commitment to this City, our residents, and their safety remains firm.

We have no interest in perpetuating the finger-pointing or manipulating a tragedy.

In the meantime, we are including resources for those grieving and those who need someone to talk to: Porter-Starke Services | Mental Health Services

Together in solidarity and healing,

Chair of VDC Becky Laughner and the VDC Board
